Exceptionally strong line up

22nd July 2020

The clay courts of the Sparta Prague Tennis Complex will be the location of the WTA tournament due to take place between August 10 and 16. For the first time ever, two players from the TOP Ten of the World Ranking will feature in the Prague Open – world Number Two and two-time Grand Slam Champion Simona Halep and eighth-ranked tennis player on the planet Belinda Bencic from Switzerland. Four Czech players – Vondrušková, Muchová, Strýcová and Siniaková, have all been confirmed for the main competition. Others can follow if they receive wild cards. Under WTA regulations, the $225 000 tournament will take place without spectators.

In addition to the aforementioned stars, Croatian Petra Martić, Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari and Kazakh star Elena Rybakina from the World TOP 20 will all feature in the Czech capital in a few weeks’ time.

The fact that all 23 of the so far announced participants of the main competition are in the World TOP 60 testifies to the exceptionally strong line up for this year’s tournament. Four spots in the main competition are up for grabs in a three-round Qualification which will feature the likes of Kristýna Plíšková and Barbora Krejčíková.

The women’s tennis tournament calendar, which was interrupted in mid-March, will restart on August 3 in Palermo, Italy. The tournament in Prague will follow, alongside a new event taking place simultaneously in Lexington, USA.
