WTA tournament will stay in the Czech Republic
Czech sports fans will not miss out on their WTA tournament this year, as Prague’s Sparta will host the Prague Open between August 10 and 16. The tournament, which was granted 225 000 dollars in total, is part of the WTA’s provisional tournament calendar. “We feel that the given opportunity to organize a WTA tournament in these times is due recognition of the recent success of Czech women’s tennis players and the organizational qualities our team has showcased in the past,” said Ivo Kaderka, President of the Czech Tennis Association.
The sixth annual J&T Banka Prague Open was to be held at the turn of April and May this year, but the tournament was cancelled due to coronavirus measures around the globe. However, at the end of June good news arrived – the Prague Open tournament, hosted by Sparta Prague, was included in the WTA’s newly published provisional calendar for 2020.
“It’s a great honour for our whole Czech tennis family. We feel that the given opportunity to organize a WTA tournament in these times is due recognition of the recent success of Czech women’s tennis players and the organizational qualities our team has showcased in the past. Our quick restart of the season certainly contributed to this, as we have already managed several tournaments without any problems,” said a very satisfied Ivo Kaderka, who is President of the Czech Tennis Association.
Sparta Prague Tennis Club director David Trunda is also pleased to be organizing the event: “Our amazing Czech audience will once again witness world-class women’s tennis. I am extremely glad that in cooperation with the Czech Tennis Association and their international diplomacy team managed by President Kaderka, we were granted the opportunity to organize such an event and prepare the right conditions for an amazing tennis spectacle,” he said.
According to CTA President Ivo Kaderka – the event is the result of excellent diplomatic relations with the WTA. “The WTA were looking for locations and organizers who could quickly put together and organize an event whilst meeting all the necessary requirements that are in place today. The references from our very successful first post-coronavirus era tournament that took place here at Sparta were a great help during our discussions,” he added.
The starting line-up will be decided in the near future, but fans can already start looking forward to some of the world’s best players. “We have entered into negotiations with the best Czech players, who are always well received at domestic events," concluded Tournament Director David Trunda.
