Samsonova draws LPO 2023 and reveals ambition to play in next year’s edition!
15-year-old Czech tennis player Laura Samsonova was the main face of the Livesport Prague Open 2023 draw, trying her hand at drawing the main phase of the WTA tournament for the very first time in her life: “I’ve never drawn a tournament before – it’s really exciting,” she said before the event.
The Sparta Prague Tennis Club player recently made a big
step in her career by winning the Junior Wimbledon Girls’ Doubles title with
friend Alena Kovackova. “We’ve known each other forever,” said Samsonova, “but
neither of us would have imagined a few years back that we could win something
like Junior Wimbledon!”
“Playing with Aja was amazing, it really helped that we are
from the same club,” commented Samsonova, adding, “we’ve actually played
together from baby tennis!”
Despite her age, Samsonova, alongside a few more young
players, is regarded as a rising star of Czech tennis and she herself has only
the highest ambitions in her career.
“I haven’t played my best at Grand Slams,” she said, “I
didn’t feel myself at the French Open and I had a tough draw at Wimbledon. In
the future, I want to win Grand Slams and the Olympic Games.”
And which Grand Slam is her favourite? “I like Wimbledon the
most,” she replied, “the entire tournament is special – like playing in white,
I really enjoyed it.”
Samsonova and Kovackova will try to continue their recent doubles success in the upcoming US Open where the pair will once again compete in the junior category.
